The Bull & Gate was my favourite Indie venue. My favourite venue of all time was the Marquee, when it was based in Wardour Street, but that was an efficient, long-established business. The Bull & Gate was the back room of a pub, with different nights runs by an always agreeable bunch of fans-turned-promoters. I’d been going there regularly since 1986 and for a short spell during 1994 they experimented with some nights mainly devoted to anything Goth, Pagan or Industrial. I don’t think it worked the way they’d hoped, so everything soon reverted to an indie base. They picked my brains for Goth bands to recommend, hence this line-up. Then someone went a bit nuts with the smoke machine. Less is more, people!
