There have been indie bands that have meant a lot to me, especially the spirited urchins that populated the stage at the Bull & Gate, but the more mainstream indie bands generally left me cold. Interesting to photo at times, but not the sort of music I’d ever buy. Quality was always obvious, the bands that were way ahead of their contemporaries, but that doesn’t mean actual excitement. One band that did surprise me though were Gene.
I was photographing this gig for a Japanese magazine and had already seen Rub Ultra, The Bluetones and Supergrass so was thinking of just grabbing a few shots then hitting the bar. Instead, I stayed to the end and not even because I was familiar with any of the songs. They worked as an instant charm, much of this down to the frontman cool of Martin Rossiter who seemed to hold the crowd captive with genial nonchalance.
