ON THIS DAY ... in 1991 - WHIRLPOOL
25 photos of another Gem Archer band, at the Borderline in 1991
More about Gem Archer, aka The Nicest Man In Music. Whirlpool fit briefly between Gem’s pre-Oasis bands Heavy Stereo and The Contenders. They had one track included on a Food Records promo cassette but that’s pretty much it. I think Food signed them because they realised they’d fucked up by not signing Gem’s previous band, The Contenders, who every journalists that saw them believed would be the Next Big Thing. Dopey record companies simply wouldn’t sig them. They were seriously good, while Whirlpool seemed a bit of a mish-mash with a blatant stab at trying to placate labels with modern elements, such as this weird keyboard character.
There is an interesting Gem Archer playlist on youtube which includes great live footage of his first band, The Edge, and also another band called Whirlpool who obviously shouldn’t be there.
Sounds very generic, doesn’t it?
