ON THIS DAY ... in 1990 - MICHELLE YEE-CHONG
90 photos of Michelle (Pink & Black, Junior Manson Slags, P.U.M.P., FAETD, She, Suck Henry, R.I.P., Seeds Of '77, Azrael etc) from 1990
Tomorrow we’ll have the COCTEAU TWINS from 1984, but right now…
I first met Michelle in 1980 as she was a friend of fellow Zigzag writer Marina Merosi, and she instantly became a well known face at gigs, not that you could see much of it beneath her mane of pink hair. From that point on she’s been involved with music, having only recently stepped down from Seeds Of ‘77.
In 1990 I was trying to adapt with a new camera, having made the switch from a manual SLR to one of those new-fangled autofocus jobs, and realised I’d also become stuck in my ways film-wise, mainly relying on Ilford HP5 and Tri-X, and considered expanding my range. I asked Michelle if she minded doing some portraits as I wanted to try out T-Max (black and white) and Ektar (colour), two films promising less grain at higher dpi, and she kindly agreed. I went on to use a bit of T-Max now and then but the Ektar was horrible despite costing a couple of quid more than other rolls. I tried it at some gigs and it gave such weirdly unpredictable results I ditched that, as did Kodak after just a few years as no-one liked it.
