ON THIS DAY ... in 1989 - D-A-D (Disneyland After Dark)
42 very much final photos of the band from Roskilde festival 1989
Okay so HERE is the final lot of photos. I think. Still haven’t found the general festival shots yet, or the pics I took around Copenhagen. They can follow when they turn up. I never used to accept trips abroad usually when at Melody Maker, on the grounds that you could potentially miss three nights of gigs around London and I never figured it was worth the bother. Made an exception for this band as I genuinely found them interesting.
No idea who the individuals are that were in the photo pit with me. Fellow writers gathered together by the record label, basically. One guy looks like he should be in Scooby Doo. There was an interesting woman (not pictured) from Rolling Stone or Spin who was very cool. We mooched about a bit by the river, as Copenhagen was a nice relaxing place. Everyone kept warning me, ‘don’t go to Christiania!’ as though it was an evil part of town, so on my first free day I went straight there. Turned out she did the same. Everyone else on the trip stayed well clear. It was some sort of hippy/anarchist/biker commune. Bit like 80’s Camden if anything. I recall being down by the river at its widest, near a bridge, when all of a sudden there was lots of weird noise, and eventually a little submarine rose up out of the water!
Anyway, D-A-D are still going, playing gigs big and small (even one I found on youtube in a fish restaurant!), and released their latest album “Speed Of Darkness” last year.
