ON THIS DAY ... in 1984 - COCTEAU TWINS

13 photos of a rare live appearance as a duo on the live TV show 'The Tube', 13th January 1984

‘The Tube’ was an 80’s tv show that was immensely popular for a while due to the amazing live musical content. On this day’s show Cocteau Twins were alongside Marc Almond and Death Cult. It was quality stuff. A largely live show throughout (with occasional filmed reports) it went out at 5.30 - 7pm, so pretty much everyone watched that before going out to gigs, and just about any band on the rise could be seen there.

The hosts could be pretty annoying, given that they were Jools Holland and Paula Yates, but the supporting cast could be good, especially Muriel Gray. Even Tony Fletcher was involved. Then Jools Holland swore during a live trailer and everybody over the age of fifty fell over, palpitating. National tabloid outrage, show pulled for a few weeks and then no more series followed. Ridiculous.
