ON THIS DAY ... in 1983 - PLACEBO (no, not that one!)
44 photos of a wonderful band that simply vanished.
Another of those great lost bands, the original Placebo (long before Brian and his mates bounced into view) were a mysterious early Eighties indie band based around the central core duo of Gary and Michelle Wild. They released two albums in the brilliant uppity pop (think Invisible Girls meets Bowie) of “England’s Trance” and the deeper, moodier “Shells”. There was meant to be a third album, as Michelle played me a tape of it, but that has never seen the light of day. Maybe on bandcamp one day? For ages there weren’t even CD versions out there, but this band definitely deserves to be better known. I interviewed them (jpegs included), found them to be lovely, interesting characters who were full of ideas so I have no idea why it all came to nought.
Tomorrow I bring you 39 photos of Playground at the George Robey in 1988.
