This was an odd one! In 1982 the Daily Mirror, for reasons I no longer recall, contacted me of all people, at Zigzag, and asked if I’d put together a one-off magazine called Women In Rock. As they said I could include whatever I wanted as long as a few main names were included (they stipulated Kate Bush, Sheena Easton and Toyah which was fine by me) I agreed, and so introduced to an unsuspecting audience the likes of Action Pact, Kabuki, Finish The Story and Wendy Wu. Also … Natasha, who’d just had a big hit with a cover of ‘Iko Iko’. She turned out to be a really interesting, charming and honest interviewee.

While that main hit was a straight music industry style affair she had a weird past, having been plugging away with unsuccessful personal projects before that (The Flirts and Natasha & The Delites) but had worked in management from a young age, helping Marc Bolan, Chas & Dave and Rod Stewart, also helping to run David Bowie’s Mainman office during the Ziggy days. She set up a record label and discovered the band Darts. She is back singing these days having survived breast cancer but in the Eighties after a few solo records didn’t chart (apart from the good ‘Boom Boom Room’) she fell out of love with the industry and quit, working with rescue horses and animal rights groups.

Tomorrow I bring you 34 photos of PENNY CANDLES and B.C. from 1989.
