Some people think that just because he was involved with the rubbish The Great Rock ‘n Roll Swindle film that Edward Tudor Pole was a gimmicky performer, but they clearly haven’t seen him onstage, or they’re idiots. He s a sublime performer, a restless, passionate melodic agent provocateur.

I first met Edward Tudor Pole (don’t call him Eddie) when I saw The Visitors supporting Gloria Mundi at Isleworth Polytechnic in the January of 1978. The Visitors were nothing special, but their singer certainly was, the gangling loon, and we kept in touch. Weirdly, they kicked him out and after his Swindle experience he formed Tenpole Tudor, who proved to be a thrilling live experience. With this new burst of activity imminent we interviewed him prior to any vinyl for the fanzine. His squat was basically freezing, and very dark, so we headed out into the bracing weather, with his broken guitar, as he charmed all the locals, never passing up the chance for some repartee. He has his autobiography out right now, The Pen Is Mightier, which I shall be reviewing shortly.

The Visitors. Once they replaced Ed they later became C-GAS 5, and still weren’t very good.

If you thought they weren’t good live, think again!
