ON THIS DAY ... in 1978 - THE SLITS and The Innocents
61 photos from the Bournemouth Village Bowl, November 22nd 1978
The Slits and The Innocents were supporting on The Clash’s ‘Sort It Out’ tour. I didn’t take any of The Clash as I just wanted to enjoy seeing them, and they were on magnificent form that night. It wasn’t too crushed down the front when The Innocents and The Slits played so I managed to get these.
The Innocents were a strange mixture of American drive and English cool, with the male guitarist almost lurking in the shadows as though presenting them as an all-female band. Bit odd. The Slits were jubilant at this gig, less frenzied, with more controlled energy and sounding much better here then at the Lyceum gigs to follow. (I saw a few gigs here and the bands always sounded good.) Even managed to get a shot of Ari doing that weird swaying from side to side, tipping one way, then the other with arms outstretched, like a malfunctioning windmill.
