DAREDEVIL #7, ULTIMATE SPIDERMAN #2 and #3
A stinker of a Daredevil issue but Spidey makes up for it.
I’m sorry, but how shit is this cover artwork? Absolutely atrocious, clearly, and I’m afraid the story isn’t much better, letting down what has been a magnificent volume so far.
Daredevil is after the Heat crime syndicate ruining Hell’s Kitchen, but also being pursued by the Seven Deadly Sins. He finds himself in a bar where Wolverine has already beaten up everybody he thought he’d be fighting, and then Wolverine, clearly possessed, wants to fight him too.
Fighty fighty, blah blah, and then Daredevil learns it isn’t Wrath that has possessed Wolverine but Lust, Daredevil’s own lust for violence. All calms down and then at the end, after Daredevil receives another tip-off about a Heat meeting, Elektra shows up at his place. Pft!
It’s worth mentioning though that Daredevil #8 is a seriously big issue, celebrating 60 years of Daredevil.
There is also a variant cover that’s actually worth having as it’s by Frank Miller.
And there’s a Giant-size #1 coming.
The story of Peter Parker re-discovering his Spider-Man existence continues at a nice leisurely pace, but issue #2 is full of incident. While Peter has been getting used his new powers, and trying to perfect landing without knocking himself out, he encounters someone called The Shocker, who tricks him idiotically, and later reveals himself as The Green Goblin, and he’s been targeting buildings owned by Fisk. The pairs are full of the first sightings of Spider-Man but are noticeably quiet when out comes to the Goblin’s antics.
Peter is soon spotted by his daughter May when returning home, his identity revealed, and she hates his black outfit.
Issue #3 finds Peter trying out new uniform ideas until one meets with May’s approval, so it’s back to classic red and blue, and he even takes her for a swing through the city! Ben and Jonah get a scuzzy office for their new paper, and when Peter drops by he tells them what he’s hear about the Goblin and how the guy in black seems so much compelling and … charming! Cheeky arse.
There’s a nice comedy stake out scene, ruined by Green Goblin appearing and the inevitable fight ensues, only for Bullseye to also turn up, happy to eradicate both. When they defeat him they introduce themselves properly, and decide to go for a drink.
Issue #4 should be with me shortly. I’ll review as soon as …
